The Complete Google LSA Training for Tree Service Companies

If you’ve been thinking about running Google Local Service Ads for your tree service business, or you’re already running them and want to squeeze more out of the budget, this one’s for you.

Local Service Ads (LSAs) are one of the biggest lead drivers we see across our client base at Tree Service Digital. We work with over 100 tree service companies across the US and Canada, and LSAs consistently show up as a top performer, especially when they’re running alongside solid SEO and a strong Google Business Profile.

Here’s the full breakdown: what LSAs are, how to get set up, and how to actually win with them.

What Are Google Local Service Ads?

Do a search for “tree service near me” or “tree removal [your city]” and look at the very top of the results. Before the regular Google Ads, before the map pack, you’ll see a short list of results with a green checkmark or “Sponsored” tag. Those are Local Service Ads, or LSAs.

They integrate directly with your Google Business Profile, which means you need that profile set up and verified before you can even think about LSAs.

Why does this matter? 88% of consumers search Google when they need home services. That’s been true for two decades and it isn’t changing anytime soon. LSAs sit at the very top of that search, on both mobile and desktop, in front of the highest-intent customer you’ll ever find: someone actively looking for a tree service company right now, in your area.

How LSAs Work

Getting verified involves a few steps:

Google runs a background check on your business, primarily the owner. Keep it simple and list one owner if you can, it speeds things up. Some states also require a license check (arborist or landscape license, depending on where you operate). You’ll also need to show proof of liability insurance, typically a million dollar policy or more.

Once you’re verified, you pay per lead, not per click. That’s the real advantage over Google Ads. You’re only charged when someone actually calls or messages you. Costs typically run $30 to $95 per lead depending on your market, your competition, and how much demand there is in your area.

Unlike Google Ads, which uses a daily budget, LSAs run on a weekly budget. Set it, and once it’s spent for the week, your ad goes dark until the next week starts. Some companies are fine running Monday through Friday. Others want coverage every day, including nights and weekends, because that’s when the emergency calls come in.

Setting Up Your Account

Go to Google and search “Local Service Ads.” Make sure you’re logged into the Google account tied to your business (your business Gmail or Google Workspace account), then follow the prompts. You’ll need:

  • A verified Google Business Profile already in place
  • Billing information
  • Proof of insurance
  • A completed background check for the business owner

Once approved, you’ll land on your profile and budget dashboard. From there, you’re live.

What Actually Moves the Needle

Getting verified is step one. Winning is a different game. Here’s what actually drives results once you’re up and running.

Reviews are everything. This is the single biggest ranking factor on the platform. If your competitor has 400 reviews and you have 25, that’s your real competition, not the ad platform itself. Get a system in place to request reviews after every job, whether that’s a text link, a QR code, or an automated flow through your CRM. Companies with more reviews and higher ratings get shown more often and win more calls, plain and simple.

Answer the phone. Google tracks whether your calls are actually getting picked up. If you’re routinely sending people to voicemail, your ad starts showing up less. Same goes for message leads. If you turn that feature on, check your dashboard daily and respond fast. Wait a few hours and that lead has already called the next company on the list.

Rate your leads. Google’s AI automatically disputes a lot of bad leads (spam calls, out-of-area requests, people looking for a job instead of a quote). But you can and should manually rate leads too. Go into your dashboard, thumbs down the bad ones, and note why. This trains the algorithm and can earn you credits.

Mark jobs as booked. When you close a job, mark it in the platform. Google factors your responsiveness and follow-through into how it ranks you.

Keep your budget and hours open. If you’re just starting out, a modest weekly budget ($150 to $250) is a fine place to test the waters. As leads come in and convert, increase it. Same with hours: keeping your ad live evenings and weekends means you’re one of the few tree companies still showing up when everyone else has shut off for the day. That’s free real estate.

What Doesn’t Count Against You

Google’s AI automatically credits leads that are spam, out of your service area, or from someone looking for a job rather than a quote. If a lead calls asking about a job outside your area, get off the phone quickly. The faster that call ends, the more likely Google credits it back to you.

What We’re Seeing Right Now

We pulled a few live case studies from June across our client base. The range is wide, but the pattern holds:

  • A company spending $250/week with 323 reviews and a 4.9 rating got 20 charged leads out of 56 total calls, most connected and not billed
  • A company at $420/week with 183 reviews got 56 charged leads for the month at under $50 per lead
  • A company at $1,050/week with 259 reviews and a 4.9 rating pulled 67 leads, or roughly 15 to 20 per week
  • A company at $700/week with almost 500 reviews and a 4.8 rating got 30 leads for under $2,000

More reviews, more budget headroom, more leads. It’s a pretty direct relationship.

A Few Recent Changes

Google now only pulls reviews from your Google Business Profile. Reviews left directly on the LSA platform have been phased out. And the old “Google Guaranteed” badge and green checkmark language has been replaced with a simple “Sponsored” tag.

Ready to Get Started

If you’re not running LSAs yet, get verified. If you are running them, take a hard look at your reviews, your response time, and your budget, and see where you can tighten things up.
