Google Just Grabbed More Control of Your Credibility

Google is about to change how tree service companies display their credentials to potential customers. Starting October 2025, all those verification badges you’ve worked to earn get replaced by one “Google Verified” badge.

Here’s the part that has changed a bit: Google’s algorithm will decide when to show it.

I’ve been managing digital marketing campaigns for tree service companies since 2018. Google makes changes constantly. Some help, some hurt, most don’t move the needle much.

This one is different.

The Control You’re Potentially Losing

Right now, if you have Google Guaranteed, Google Verified, and License Verified badges, customers see all of them.

After October 2025, Google’s AI decides when showing your verification “will most effectively aid consumer decision-making.” Translation: they show it when they think it matters, not when you do.

Think about what this means. You invest in licensing, insurance, background checks, and verification processes. But Google controls when potential customers see proof of that investment.

For tree service companies that have differentiated themselves through multiple credentials, this removes a key competitive advantage.

What Actually Drives Success

Here’s what I tell every tree service owner I work with: review ratings are the biggest factor in getting clicks on Local Services Ads.

The data proves it. A company with 3.6 stars gets 5.8% of clicks. Move to 4.5 stars and you get 7.9% of clicks, even from a lower position.

While Google experiments with algorithmic badge display, reviews remain the constant. They’ve stayed the primary success driver through every platform change over the past four years.

This won’t change in 2025.

Google’s Personalization Play

Here’s where this gets sophisticated. Google’s algorithm will likely detect which consumers do deep research versus those who just look for reviews.

If someone typically checks licensing, insurance history, and Better Business Bureau profiles, Google’s AI knows this. They’ll probably see more detailed verification information.

Customers who focus mainly on ratings and reviews might see simplified displays with less verification detail.

You’re essentially competing in two different games simultaneously.

Preparing for the Change

The verification consolidation launches in a month (October 2025). Here’s what forward-thinking tree service companies should do now:

First, optimize your Local Services Ads profile completely. Upload photos, target the right service areas, manage your budget actively. The fundamentals matter more when Google controls verification display.

Second, focus relentlessly on five-star reviews. Get them after every job, every week. This becomes even more critical when badge visibility becomes unpredictable.

Third, maintain comprehensive verification across all categories. Even if Google shows less detail, having complete credentials positions you for algorithm favorability.

Fourth, expand your review presence beyond Google. Facebook, Nextdoor, LinkedIn, Better Business Bureau. Multiple platforms create comprehensive trust signals that algorithms can’t control.

The Fundamental Truth

Tree service owners often tell me their customers “aren’t the review-leaving type” or “don’t do technology.”

Here’s what I’ve learned after 15 years in digital marketing: your customers will leave reviews if you make it easy and ask at the right moment.

Right when you finish the job and they’re happy with the work, pull out your phone or review card and ask them. “Would you mind leaving us a quick review while I’m here to help you with it?”

Most people say yes if you’re standing right there to walk them through it.

The ones who say no won’t hurt your business. The ones who say yes will transform it.

Better yet, automate review requests via text and email marketing with every paid invoice, this will skyrocket your Reviews quickly.

With acquisition costs rising for 75% of home services businesses, this simple system becomes your competitive advantage.

Google will keep making changes. Algorithms will keep evolving. Verification systems will keep shifting.

But timing beats technology every time. Focus on what you control: the moment when a satisfied customer is standing in front of you, impressed with your work.

That moment doesn’t require Google’s permission to display.
